Standby generator gas lines: what the job involves

Sizing the line for the generator's BTU draw

Every standby generator lists its full-load fuel consumption in the installation manual, in cubic feet per hour or BTU per hour. Home standby units from Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton and similar makers are among the hungriest gas appliances you can put on a house: a whole-home air-cooled unit running flat out can burn as much gas as a furnace, water heater and range combined. We size the pipe from that full-load number, the length of the run including fittings, the supply pressure at your meter and every other appliance already sharing the system, using the sizing method in the CSA B149.1 gas code.

Why the line is usually bigger than people expect

Generators are unforgiving of an undersized line. When a big load kicks in, such as a central air compressor or well pump starting, an engine that can't get enough gas bogs down, the voltage sags and the unit may shut itself off on a fault, right when you need it. Teeing into the nearest half-inch branch almost never works. Most installs need a dedicated run back toward the meter, and a pad at the far side of the house means a longer run and larger pipe again. Sometimes the meter itself doesn't have the capacity for the added load. Then Enbridge Gas has to upgrade it, and we flag that at the quote so it doesn't stall the job.

Working alongside your electrician

The generator's electrical connection and transfer switch are done by a licensed electrician under an Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) permit. The fuel side is ours. We settle the pad location together first, because the unit has to meet the manufacturer's clearances from windows, doors, vents and the gas meter, and that spot decides where both the conduit and the fuel line go. We usually rough in the piping while the pad is set, then make the final connection, pressure-test and purge the line so the electrician can start the unit and test the transfer switch under load.

Natural gas or propane in Simcoe County

Inside Barrie and most built-up areas you're likely on Enbridge natural gas, which is the simplest choice: a continuous supply and no tank to watch. Many rural properties in Springwater, Oro-Medonte and the surrounding townships have no gas main on the road, so the generator runs on propane. Propane works well, but it's a stored supply. The tank has to hold enough to carry the generator through a multi-day outage, and in deep cold a small tank can't vaporize fuel fast enough to feed a large engine, so tank size matters as much as fill level. If you already heat with propane, we check whether the existing tank and regulator can take the added load, and we coordinate with your propane supplier on the tank side.

Above-ground vs underground fuel piping

If the generator sits near the meter, a short above-ground run of steel pipe along the foundation, supported and protected from damage, is usually the simplest route. When the pad is across the yard or the route crosses a walkway or driveway, we bury the line instead. Buried runs use polyethylene pipe with a tracer wire and approved risers where the pipe comes out of the ground, because plastic gas pipe is only allowed underground. Every dig starts with a locate request through Ontario One Call, and burial depth and backfill follow the code.

TSSA rules and why outages hit this area hard

In Ontario, fuel-gas work is regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Gas piping and appliance hookups must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor using certified gas technicians, following CSA B149.1 as adopted in Ontario. Your insurer may ask who did the work if you ever make a claim. Around Barrie, the outages that send people shopping for generators come from summer windstorms, freezing rain and heavy wet snow on overhead lines, and rural homes at the end of long feeds often wait longest for power to return.
